As the funeral for Mrs. Komori
began, I noticed a lady at the back, wiping tears
from her eyes. She caught my attention because she
was the only one crying. Mrs. Komori was called into
the Lords presence at 99-years-of-age after being
unconscious for a year and a half. Her family was no
doubt sad, but they were not crying. What was REALLY
strange about the lady crying, though, was that she
was one of the funeral-home employees! She didn’t
know Mrs. Komori, and she certainly should have been
used to funerals! Yet, she cried through the entire
funeral, just as she had cried through the entire
service the night before. Strange, I thought.
After the service we rushed off to the crematory, so
I did not have time to talk with her, but just as
the cremation ceremony was about to begin, she came
up to me.
“I work at the funeral home,” she said, “but I had
never seen a Christian funeral until today! Last
night, you said that there is a God who will forgive
sins. Since I heard that, I haven’t been able to
stop crying. Will he really?”
We had only a few minutes to talk before I needed to
start the cremation ceremony, but I assured her that
indeed God WILL forgive and she promised to come to
church soon. Interestingly, of the millions of
people in Tokyo, she is friends of someone in our
church of 30! How long has God been working on this
lady, I wonder!
What incredible steps God goes to in order to save
just one of us! Indeed, He does not wish for even
one to perish. (2 Peter 3:9)
Thank all of you who prayed for me. Leading a family
I had never met through a very complicated funeral
process (which I was not familiar with) in Japanese
was far beyond my ability. After I sent an SOS to
you, God really changed my attitude and gave me
peace. Thanks for your prayers. They DO make a big
difference.
Warmly,
David Kindervater
P.S.
By the way, not only did God minister at the
funeral, the night before as I was preparing, two
young men came to the church (independently). One
was interested, one was desperate. Neither had ever
been to a church or read the Bible before. Two men
in one night may not sound like much to you, but
that is about a years-worth here in Japan! Thanks
again for praying.
